The Norwegian involvement in the European Plate Observing System (EPOS) began with the formation of the Norwegian National EPOS Consortium in 2009. This led to the EPOS-Norway (EPOS-N) project, the official Norwegian node of the pan-European EPOS infrastructure.
Funded by the Research Council of Norway, EPOS-N was implemented from 2016-2020 to integrate national solid Earth science networks and specifically address monitoring gaps in the Arctic. This initial implementation phase was followed by an operational phase from 2021-2025.
The next evolution of this national effort is EPOS-NG, which is designated as Phase 2 of EPOS-Norway. This progression is part of the broader EPOS journey, which was included in the ESFRI roadmap in 2008 and reached its operational, Europe-wide phase with the establishment of the EPOS ERIC in 2018.
