This instrument pool will provide a dedicated system for long-term, offshore pore-pressure and temperature (P-T) monitoring, critical for assessing submarine geohazards. We will build three standalone piezometers, capable of year-long deployments with multiple sensors distributed at depth.
Purpose & Critical Data
Continuous P-T data is fundamental for:
- Characterizing and modeling submarine landslide mechanics and potential tsunami sources.
- Investigating earthquake precursors and shallow gas hazards.
- Monitoring subsurface fluid dynamics and the integrity of offshore carbon storage (CCS) sites.
Built on Proven Expertise
The development leverages decades of specialized experience:
- NGI brings extensive expertise in customizing piezometers for slope stability investigations.
- UIT The Arctic University of Norway has established protocols for efficient offshore data acquisition and research on continental margin fluid systems.
User Community
This unique capability serves a broad spectrum of users, enabling synergistic projects between academia and industry. Primary users include:
- Universities and research institutes.
- Energy companies and the offshore industry.
- Organizations focused on offshore hazard assessment and CCS monitoring.
